Seismic Anamoly - It's What You Don't Say
By Ben Ohmart, MusicDish.com

For those without ears and computers, you're missing a cool icy treat. Seismic Anamoly (www.seismicanamoly.com) is an instrumental rock/metal project started by Michael S. (of Meridian, MS, USA) last year. Whether or not you consider the fact that the man hadn't even started playing and composing until 2000, you'll be enticed by the sound this one-man band is already coming up with...and the clever way in which he's using the online world to make some "more than virtual" headway in the tough business of music.

While most of us used MP3.com to the max way back when it was virtually free, it was steeped in the dreck of lackies and quacks (myself included). When they began charging for the service, one important event occurred for the betterment of all....only those musicians who were really serious about music (and 'making it') became the natural selection. Call it "the next step of Darwinism."

Granted, there are probably some rich kids still spending money for feedback, but it ain't Mike. Results tell. Seismic Anamoly has a chest full of musical badges denoting his online success. Of the 3 cds now available on mp3.com, each one of them has charted highly. "Broken Dreams", off the Ramifications album, climbed to #1 on the Power Metal chart and #5 on the Overall Metal chart. With all the competition around, think for a second what that means. Forget Billboard. MP3.com is where the talent, not the money, charts. And to list all of Seismic Anamoly's online honors alone would take up the gist of this article.

Still, we've got a little time. Seismic Anamoly's singles have conquered ZeBOX's Top 40, Maddog Rock Radio's Top 40, MP3.com's Instrumental Metal chart (#1), Instrumental Rock chart (#1), Progressive Metal chart (#1), Progressive Rock chart (#1), and Soft Rock chart (#1). A total of eleven #1's, two #2's, one #3 and one #4 on that global music icon, MP3.com, since September 2002.

Seismic Anamoly's secret is spreading himself around. True, the music is mostly hard rock/metal, but not head breaking. The rhythms and instrumentation vary enough to make every track "necessary" (how often can you really say that about the major labels?). All of Seismic Anamoly's work is done with his Peavey EVH Wolfgang, Millennium J Series bass and an Indianola ER acoustic. Just one guy? Yep. Thought we settled that before.

Mike calls his style, "Rock/Power Metal with an occasional dose of Soft Rock thrown in for good measure!" He is influenced by the likes of "Van Halen, Robin Trower, Ronnie Montrose, Ted Nugent, Ace Frehley, Ritchie Blackmore, Billy Gibbons... the list goes on and on... any really good Metal/Rock bands were always favorites of mine... Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Foghat... and there was this one little known group out of Louisiana that went by the name Potliquor; just plain Killer..."

Seismo is not touring yet, and probably never will. But fans of this music will wonder why that's important. The studio is where Seismic Anamoly shines. It's brilliant mixing work, leveling layer upon layer of guitar, bass, and percussion.

"I have always loved Metal, but I am definitely a student of the Old Skool. The new Hardcore Metal and Grindcore really doesn't appeal to me much...the music is great, but to me the lyrics sound like somebody hugging the John after a rough nite..."

Though it's a tough life for a musician, Mike admits that you've got to be a realist, even if the fans love ya. "I haven't quit my day job, if that's what you mean, and probably never will. I'm not that good... but I enjoy making my music and having a great time doing it. I like to kick back and play around with different musical scenarios until the right one comes along. I would love for at least one of my tunes to be used in a Film or TV show... that would be the Ultimate for me.

"In the 10 months since I put my stuff up on the Net, things have really taken off. It is a GREAT tool to get your name out there in front of the fans and to let many people from all over the world hear your stuff. At least I have a presence in Cyberspace now."

But how do you Keep your fans coming back to consistently put you at #1? "Work hard, enjoy yourself, don't take criticism too strongly, do your best, and play what ya like... AND drink plenty of good, cold BREW!!"

Obviously none of this music was laid down while under the influence. Seismic Anamoly is more interested in assembling some catchy-ass music without worrying about tapping markets or splitting or fitting into genres. It all boils down to knowing what works and what doesn't.

"I've been playing around with the guitar for quite some time now... I just started the project "Seismic Anamoly" in 2002. Up until then, most of what I did was playing some of the local pubs with my Acoustic doing mellow, soft rock and the like."

Being able to say you're a #1 recording artist this early in the game is a head sweller. Let's hope Seismo uses that power for good.

"I wanna shout a HUGE THANKS to my Promoter (and friend) at MP3.com, Wayne R. Rogaczewski of MP3 College Radio Network, for all his help and efforts...to DJ Catatonic for all his support over the past year... and to all the good people at MyMP3Board.com, administrated by a fantastic artist in his own right, Mike Burn of Frankfurt, Germany, with whom I recently completed a KILLER collaboration, and which is frequented by two of the Hottest Indie female artists on the scene today, Debbie Mannas of Heisha and Chris Bowers of Thinking Out Loud, both of Hong Kong.... Cheers, Thanks, and Best Wishes to you all!!"
